A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

-chloe,-es (s.f.I), also -chloa,-ae (s.f.I), in Gk. comp. ‘grass;’: > Gk. A blade of grass; “the first shoot of plants (in spring); the green blade of corn or grass; the young verdure (of trees), foliage” (Liddell & Scott)]; see first declension (2).

Myoxanthus chloe (Orchidaceae)

NOTE: the declension of –chloa,-ae (s.f.I):

     singular plural
Nom. –chloa -chloae
Gen. –chloae -chloarum
Dat. –chloae -chlois
Acc. –chloam -chloas
Abl. –chloa -chlois

Actinochloa,-ae (s.f.I); Adenochloa,-ae (s.f.I); Echinochloa,-ae (s.f.I) > Gk. echinos, sea-urchin + chloa, grass Fernald 1950; Eriochloa,-ae (s.f.I) > Gk. erion, wool + chloe, grass (Fernald 1950); Heleochloa,-ae (s.f.I), > Gk. helos, a marsh + chloa, grass; Leptochloa,-ae (s.f.I), > Gk. leptos, slender + chloa, grass, from the long attenuated spikes (Fernald 1950); Scolochloa,-ae (s.f.I) > Gk. scolops, a prickle + chloa, grass (Fernald 1950); Xerochloa,-ae (s.f.I).

NOTE: the declension of –chloe,-es (s.f.I):

     singular plural
Nom. –chloe -chloae
Gen. –chloes -chloarum
Dat. –chloae -chlois
Acc. –chloen -chloas
Abl. –chloe -chlois
Buchloe,-es (s.f.I), > Gk. bous, cow or ox + chloe, grass (Fernald 1950); Epichloe,-es (s.f.I); Eremochloe,-es (s.f.I); Hierochloe,-es (s.f.I) > Gk. hieros, sacred + chloe, grass, “these sweet-scented grasses being strewn before church-doors on saints’ days in the North of Europe” (Fernald 1950); Monanthochloe,-es (s.f.I); Notochloe,-es (s.f.I); Oxychloe,-es (s.f.I).

NOTE: there are a few adjectives in epithets: -chlous,-a,-um (adj.A):

Ending in –chlous: Oligosporus xanthochlous.

Ending in –chloa: chilochloa, heterochloa, hydrochloa, leptochloa,

limnochloa, lophochloa, macrochloa, mesochloa, psilochloa, rhiniochloa, sclerochloa, urochloa, xanthochloa

NOTE: these epithets are adjectives; to determine whether they are in fact nouns in apposition instead would require individual study; e.g. Panicum echinochloa, the epithet may be a noun, the genus Echinochloa, in apposition to the generic name Panicum. A clue is the epithet is feminine, hence a noun, as it does not match the gender of the apposite genus (neuter).

Ending in –chloum: Hippeastrum mesochloum; Microstegium calochloum

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
