-achne,-es (s.f.I); -achna,-ae (s.f.I): ‘chaff, husk; froth;’ glume [> Gk. achnE (s.f.I), “anything that comes off the surface, such as the foam or froth of the sea, of wine; (of solids) the chaff that flies off in winnowing; the down on fruits” (Liddell & Scott)]; see chaff (Eng.noun)

. NOTE: there is no ending –achna,-ae (s.f.I), nor adjectives in –achnus,-a,-um (adj.A).

NOTE: the plural endings of names ending in –achne,-es (s.f.I) are the same as regular first declension nouns in the plural: -achnae, -achnarum, -achnis, -achnas, -achnis.

Aciachne,-es (s.f.I) (Poaceae) > L. acus,-us (s.f. IV), needle + Gk. achne, chaff, glume; Gluma fructífera in acumen angustum producta (B&H), the fertile glume extended into a very narrow acumen.

Acrachne,-es (s.f.I),(Poaceae); Anthosachne,-es (s.f.I),(Poaceae); Ancistrachne,-es (s.f.I),(Poaceae); Andrachne,-es (s.f.I),(Phyllanthaceae); Aplachne,-es (s.f.I).

Chionachne,-es (s.f.I) ((Poaceae) > Gk. Chion, ‘snow’ + achne, ‘chaff,’ with snow-white chaff, in allusion to the pale coloured glumes of some species.

Colobachne,-es (s.f.I) (Poaceae);

Diplachne,-es (s.f.I), from diploos, double, and achne, chaff (Poaceae) (Paxton); Gluma florens vacuis vix brevior, apice sa?pius breviter 2-fida (B&H), the flowering glume scarcely shorter than the empty (i.e. sterile) ones, at the apex often shortly 2-fid.

Drepachne,-es (s.f.I); Eriachne,-es (s.f.I), > Gk. erion, wool + achne, a glume; the glumes are woolly. (Poaceae) (Paxton).

Isachne,-es (s.f.I), > Gk. isos, equal + achne, a glume. (Poaceae)(Paxton).

Monachne,-es (s.f.I), > Gk. monos, one + achne, a glume. (Poaceae)(Paxton).

Schizachne,-es (s.f.I), (Poaceae).

Sclerachne,-es (s.f.I), (Poaceae), > Gk. scler-, hard, + achne, glume; gluma fructífera indurata, fructum includens (B&H(, the fertile glume indurate [hardened], enclosing the fruit.

Triplachne,-es (s.f.I), (Poaceae): Gluma florens hyalina, vacuis multo brevior, lobis 2 lateralibus in setam productis, arista dorsali (B&H), the flowering glume hyaline, much shorter than the empty [i.e. sterile] ones, with 2 lateral lobes elongated into a seta, with a dorsal awn.

- more Polytocae et Chionachnis (B&H), in the manner of Polytoca and Chionachne [=gen.sg.].

- flos inferior hermaphroditus perfectus in Isachne [= abl.sg.] (B&H), lower flower hermaphrodite, perfect in Isachne.

- glumae infimae vacuae infra articulationem persistens in Isachne (B&H), lowermost glumes empty, persisting below the articulation.

Arthropogon xerachne Ekman, epithet = noun in apposition.
