CACTACEAE.As indicated in the discussion of Pseudorhipsalis lankesteri (Kimnach) Barthlott, the type locality (for its basionym) includes the phrase “entre Cañas y La Unión,” towns presumably (on the basis of other evidence) in the Valle de General. This prompted our Cactaceae author (Manual co-PI Barry Hammel) to remark that there was no town in that region named “Cañas.”Recently, however, while examining a Costa Rican topographic map, Barry discovered to his surprise that there actually is such a town in that vicinity, viz., about 4.3 km from Volcán, along the road leading southeast out of Volcán and crossing over the Río Ángel. We have noted in the past that different versions or editions of the same map quadrangle may differ in their content, e.g., one indicating a town or topographic feature that is not labeled on the other; we suspect that is the case here. With that said, the type locality of P. lankesteri remains nonsensical by virtue of its reference to a nonexistent (on any map we have seen) “Volcán Ángel.”The involvement of horticulturists (all too frequent in pet families like Cactaceae) often spells trouble down the line for us more punctilious sorts.
