The Cutting Edge

Volume XXVI, Number 4, October 2019

COSTACEAE. Thanks to Monteverde's own Willow Zuchowski for noticing and letting us know that the Manual treatment for this family shows Costus ricus Maas & H. Maas ocurring at “0—1400 m” and in the “Cord. de Tilarán,” which seemed to her too high up and too far north for a sp. otherwise known mostly from the Golfo Dulce region. So she got to checking and found that Haber 10581 (CR, MO), from 1400 m in the Cordillera de Tilarán and originally identified by family specialists (and Manual Costaceae authors) Paul Maas and Hiltje Maas-van de Kamer as C. ricus, was later redetermined by the same individuals as C. montanus Maas. As far as we can tell, that was the only record of Costus ricus from up thar, so the Manual distribution statement should be modified to “0—1100 m” and by removing “Cord. de Tilarán.”
