The Cutting Edge

Volume XXVI, Number 1, January, 2019

News and Notes | Leaps and Bounds | Germane Literature | Season's Pick | Annotate your copy

Photos for this season’s Pick, Justicia metallica Lindau (Acanthaceae), came to us in a roundabout, but not unusual way:  forwarded, by Manual Aristolochiaceae contributor Esteban Jiménez, for help on the determination.  Esteban had acquired the photos from a friend of his, Marvin López, who took them near Piro, at the southern end of the Peninsula de Osa.

The sp. is distinctive for its anisophyllous leaves (unequal at each node) that are often described as bicolored (dark green above and purple below), and for its often secund inflorescences with small, pink to purplish flowers.  The photos provided show all of these distinctive features, and are much better than the few others we were able to find searching the Web.  Thanks to both Esteban and Marvin for getting them to us!
