The Cutting Edge

Volume XXIII, Number 2, April 2016

News and Notes | Leaps and Bounds | Germane Literature | Season's Pick | Annotate your copy

SEASON'S PICK: Two disjunct and unrelated spp., Oecopetalum greenmanii Standl. & Steyerm. (Icacinaceae; now in Metteniusaceae fide APG) and Sloanea garcia-cossioi Pal.-Duque (Elaeocarpaceae), tie for this season's photo op.  One of us was involved in the first-known Costa Rican collections of these rare and unusual disjunct spp. (from Mexico/Guatemala and Colombia, respectively) almost exactly 25 and 28 years ago (see J. C. Saborío et al. 125, CR, MO; Hammel & Robles 16782, CR, MO).  Where does the time go?  Both spp. have been collected in Costa Rica several times since, and both often at the capable hands of Osa resident Reinaldo Aguilar.  We are very pleased to find these spp., alive and well, virtually or nearly in the very same spots as the original collections, in the always amazing forest on the ridges surrounding Rancho Quemado, on the Península de Osa.  See more photos at Hammel's Flickr of Oecopetalum greenmanii (from the ridge between Rancho Quemado and Drake) and Reinaldo's of Sloanea garcia-cossioi (taken at his own property at Los Charcos, along the road between Rincón and Rancho Quemado).
