The Cutting Edge

Volume XXI, Number 2, April 2014

News and Notes | Leaps and Bounds | Germane Literature | Season's Pick

NEW DATABASE. the Costa Rican Museo Nacional announced, on 9 April, the on-line availability of their brand-new database, apparently named "Ecobiosis," to be officially unveiled during a gala affair at the Museo on 29 April. Presently, the new database may be accessed by means of the following URL:

http://ecobiosis.museocostarica.go.cr/

We already tried this out and find it to be much more satisfactory than the only other way (GBIF) we have had to access CR specimen data via the World Wide Web up to now. Users may be dazzled by the photos, maps, and other multimedia features, but will also (and perhaps more importantly) have quick and easy access to comprehensive specimen data for every sp. in the database. The numerous pop-down windows required to search for and see data may at first confuse users (of TROPICOS), but once learned, the system does provide for combined searches, e.g., on collector name and taxon, or taxon and various aspects of political or physical geography. We are told that the data are automatically updated on a weekly basis, according to new accessions and new dets. entered at the Museo.
