Fragments from the Botanical Frontier:

RAILROADS
In this 1958 letter, Julian Steyermark thanked Muehlenbach for his records and wrote that his collection was "one of the most important for the state." The Carex specimen that Steyermark identifies appears in Muehlenbach's color-coded notes at the beginning of this section and in the framed specimen on this wall. Missouri Botanical Garden collections.

Julian Steyermark (1909-1988) in 1959. Hunt Institute collections.

Muehlenbach's handwritten draft, "Adventitious and escaped plants new to Missouri," reports "almost two hundred" species on the railroad tracks. The heavily foxed inexpensive paper combined with the pencilled writing make this document brittle and difficult to read. Missouri Botanical Garden collections.
