Endangered: Orchids

Cattleya violacea, known as “Superba del Orinoco,” is an epiphytic orchid once common along lowland rivers of the Venezuelan Guayana. Orchids are the largest plant family in the Venezuelan Guayana, with over 600 species and 150 genera. European orchid collectors drove early exploration of the Guayana Shield, in part. Showy species continue to be gathered from the wild, despite effective means of cultivation.
