They can be quite large and strong, and they do hiss loudly when disturbed. The "horns" are used in male-male fighting. In some species hissing is used in courtship, and a male prevented from hissing will not be accepted by females. Madagascar hissing cockroaches are beginning to have a following as pets and are commonly shown in insect zoos.
