A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
zoster-: in Gk. comp. belt- [> Gk. zOstEr,-Eros (s.m.III): the warrior's belt or baldric, which secured the body-armor, zone, or zona being the woman's girdle; later, any belt or girdle; also, a seaweed]. zostron,-i (s.n.II), a belt, girdle]; see belt (Eng.noun); see girdle (Eng.noun); see see zoster,-eris (s.m.III]..

zona,-ae (s.f.I), q.v.: (med.): “an encircling band or marking; shingles (Herpes zoster)” (Glare), a disease with a characteristic belt- or girdle-like skin rash, commonly called ‘shingles’ which derives from the Latin ‘cingulum,’ or ‘girdle.’

Zostera,-ae (s.f.I) L.: Eelgrass; > Gk. zoster, a belt, in reference to the ribbon-like leaves of this genus of marine plants; Zostera marina L.; Zosteraceae; dim. Zosterella,-ae (s.f.I).
