A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

vulnerarius,-a,-um (adj.A): of or belonging to wounds, as of a substance used for the healing of wounds; acting on wounds [> L. vulnus,-eris (s.n.III) , q.v., a wound];

- plantae vulnerariae, plants used in the healing of wounds or injuries.

- emplastrum vulnerarium, a plaster for wounds.

- chirurgus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. chirurgo: surgeon, chirurgeon, “pure Latin medicus [i.e. doctor] vulnerarius” (Lewis & Short); see chirurgus,-i (s.m.I).

Vulneraria,-ae (s.f.I), a vulnerary, a vulnerary remedy;

[Pyrola folio mucronato serrato] vulneraria est, usu interno & externo celeberrima (Ray), Pyrola is a vulnerary, most celebrated in its internal and external use.

Vulnerarius,-ii (s.m.II), abl.sg. vulnerario: a healer or doctor specializing in the treatment of wounds; “a surgeon” (Pliny)” (Lewis & Short) TO DO.

Anthyllis Vulneraria L. 'an old generic name, from the ancient use of plant as a vulnerary or astringent' (Fernald 1950).

NOTE: vulnerary (Engl. adj.) > L. vulnus, ‘wound’; “promoting the healing of wounds; curative” (WIII); as a noun, “a vulnerary remedy” (WIII); probably for its styptic qualities: styptic > Gk. styptos, contracted, astringent: “tending to contract or bind; tending to check bleeding” (WIII).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
