A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Volume: volumen,-inis (s.n.III), abl.sg. volumine [> L. volumen, roll of writing, book, volume, > volvere, to roll; hence revolution, whirl, turn, eddy; also revolution, alteration, change]; (in English) a large amount, a mass or large quantity of something; a space, or amount of space (defined by cubic units)];

NOTE: abbrev. = v., or vol.

1. “a coil, twist, convolution, etc.; a rolling movement (of waves)” (Glare).

2. (book): volumen,-inis (s.n.III), abl.sg. volumine [> L. volume,-inis (s.n.III), “a roll of papyrus forming a book or part of a book; a book in any form” (Glare);

Volume (Eng.noun): “a collection of printed sheets bound together whether constituting a single work, a part of a work, or a part in a related series of works; a book” (WIII); one of a series of books forming a complete work or collection.

Cf. tomus,-i (s.m.II), q.v. = a volume forming a part of a larger work; - [Muscorum Frondosorum] Tomus Primus; Tomus Secundus (Hedw.), first part (volume); second part (volume) (i.e. parts of a larger work). NOTE: abbrev. = t., tom., (book) ‘volume,’ (see t.(3).

- volumen primum, first volume; v. I; vol. I.

- Genera Plantarum, volumen tertium, Genera of Plants, third volume (B&H); v. III; vol. III.

- (volumen) commentarium (adj.A), abl. sg. (volumine) commentario; i.e. Commentarium,-ii (s.n.II) [sc. volumen], a commentary, book of notes or remarks, notebook.

3. “space occupied or enclosed by cubic units (as inches, feet, quarts ... [etc.]: capacity” (WIII);

- [fungi] sphaerulae papillatae, demum plus minus bullatae, nonnullae ad volumen triplex fere inflatae (S&A), the sphaerules with little papillae, then more or less blister-shaped, some inflated to nearly three times their volume.

- [fungi] capillamento laxo intertextus, in volumen commune coalitus est, cujus superficies glaberrima lucens supra colliculos hemisphaericos, qui sunt capillitiorum singulorum apices, regulariter dispositos ostendit (S&A), interwoven with a lax mass of fibers, grown together into a common volume [i.e. mass or quantity], the surface of which is absolutely smooth, shining, above, it displays hemisphaeric hillocks [i.e. bumps], which are the apices of uniformly arranged individual capillitia.
