A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Virus,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. viro, nom.& acc. pl. vira, gen. pl. virorum: a slimy liquid, slime; a poison, as of snakes; a harsh, bitter taste [> L. virus,-i (s.n.II) a poisonous liquid, poison, venom, virus = venenum,-i (s.n.II), q.v.; an offensive odor, stench; virus odoris, an offensive pungency; a sharp, saline taste (as of sea-water) (Lewis & Short)]; see poison.

NOTE: the neuter case.

NOTE: to be distinguished from vir, gen. sg. viri (s.m.II), abl. sg. viro, a man, gen. pl. virorum, of men;

- virus mortiferum, deadly virus.

- lentum destillat ab inguine virus, a sticky discharge (slimy liquid) dripping from the groin.
