ianthinus,-a,-um (adj.A): violet, L. from a Greek and Latin word, violet-blue, violet-; “pure blue stained with red, so as to be intermediate between the two colors” (Lindley); (fungi) “bluish-purple; violet; ‘violaceous’ (S)” (S&D). .

ianthinum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. ianthino: the color violet. ianthina,-orum (pl.n.II), violet-colored garments. Ianthis,-idis (s.f.III), abl. sg. ianthide: a violet-colored flower.

Iodanthus T. & G. (s.m.II) Purple Rocket [> Gk. ion, s.n.II, the violet (in L. viola,-ae s.f.I); > Gk. iodes, violet-colored, and anthos, flower.

amethyst-color: amethysteus,-a,-um (adj.A), amethystinus,-a,-um (adj.A): amethyst, violet(H.C.C. 35); also applied to color-range between purple and violet (Stearn 1983). These words imply, together with hyacinthinus,-a,-um (adj.A) and atro-violcaeus,-a,-um (adj.A) a deeper hue of violet than violaceus.

becoming or turning a violet color, the color of violets, violet: violascens,-entis (part.B).

bishop's-violet: episcopali-violaceus,-a,-um (adj.A).

lavender-colored, violet: lavendulaceus,-a,-um (adj.A), lavendulus,-a,-um (adj.A); cf. lilacinus,-a,-um (adj.A): lilac, i.e. 'pale dull violet mixed a little with white' (Lindley) but with more red in it and nearer purple than lavendulaceus, which has more blue and is nearer violet, both being grayed and light (Stearn, 1983).

lilac-colored: see lavender-colored.

liventer (adv.) violaceus,-a,-um (adj.A): lividly violet.

lividus,-a,-um (adj.A), liveus,-a,-um (adj.A), livius,-a,-um (adj.A): livid, a vague term which 'may be defined as the peculiar livery effect of adding grey and black to the range of hues between blue and red' (H.A. Dade), originally a blue or leaden color' (Stearn 1983); 'livid' was a color used by the Romans to refer to bruises, 'black and blue,' also bluish, blue.

lividulus,-a,-um (adj.A): a paler color than livid.

livid-violet, livid a blue or leaden color: liveo-violaceus,-a,-um (adj.A), livido-violaceus,-a,-um (adj.A); see lividus,-a,-um (adj.A).

mauve, mallow purple, the first synthetic dye derived from phenazine, a basic violet, formerly used chiefly for dyeing silk (WIII): malvinus,-a,-um (adj.A), malvicolor,-oris (adj.B) [> L. malva,-ae (s.f.I), the mallow, the color of malva petals].

pale violet: subviolaceus,-a,-um (adj.A).

slate-violet: violaceo-ardesiacus,-a,-um (adj.A); see slate-colored. tyrianthinus,-a,-um (adj.A): a color between purple and violet (Lewis & Short).

veronica-violet (H.C.C.6.39): veronicinus,-a,-um (adj.A).

violaceous black: violaceo-niger,-ra,-rum (adj.A).

violaceous gray: violaceo-griseus,-a,-um (adj.A).

violet-blue: violaceo-coeruleus,-a,-um (adj.A).

violet carmine, a dark reddish purple: violaceo-carminus,-a,-um (adj.A), violaceo-carmineus,-a,-um (adj.A), violaceo- coccineus,-a,-um (adj.A), violaceo-carmesinus,-a,-um (adj.A), violaceo-kermesinus,-a,-um (adj.A); see carmine.
