A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Vimen,-inis (s.n.III), abl.sg. vimine: a long flexible shoot, an osier, that is, a willow with pliable twigs or shoots used in furniture and basketry; “a flexible [shoot or] branch of a tree or other plant, cut for wickerwork or similar purposes, withy” (Glare); a pliable branch; see willow; see branch; see sarmentum-i (s.n.II); see twig.

- [Vitis indica] Caules 1. sarmenta inferiora hujus viminis copia aquae purissimae frigidaeque sunt repleti, detruncatione mox exstillantis (Swartz), the stems or [l. = vel] lower sarmenta [of this flexible branch] are filled with an abundance of the purest and cold water, soon trickling out after detruncation [i.e. cutting or lopping off].

- FOLIIS:

i. Angustioribus & longioribus, viminibus lentis; SALIX.

ii. Latioribus & angulosis, qua nota a salignis differunt quae in nonnullis speciebus lata sunt; POPULUS (Ray):

WITH THE LEAVES:

i. Narrower and longer, with the [flexible branches or twigs] pliant; Salix.

ii. Wider and angled, by which character they differ from [willow leaves] which in some species are broad; Populus.

- Frútices bacciferi semper virentes sunt vel:

i. Aphylli, equisetiformes, flosculis ad nodos & in summis viminibus;

TRAGUS, Uva marina. [Uva marina, Sea-side Grape see ephedra

ii. Foliosi (RAY);

The berry-producing shrubs are evergreen either:

1. Lacking leaves, equisetiform, with florets at the nodes and on the highest [flexible branches - perhaps stolons?]; Tragus, Ova marina.

NOTE: Tragus, or bur grass, has stoloniferous culms and may be low and mat forming. Vimineus = stoloniferous? Uva marina is Sea-side Grape [Coccoloba uvifera], also possibly a species of Ephedra, which has species of clambering vines].

Viminaria,-ae (s.f.I), Smith. From vimen, a twig; the appearance of the species is that of a bundle of twigs, being destitute of leaves. Fabaceae. (Paxton).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
