A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

verus,-a,-um (adj.A): actual, true, real, genuine, authentic, standard; compar. verior,-ius; superl. verissimus,-a,-um (adj.A); opp. falsus,-a,-um (adj.A), fictus,-a,-um (adj.A), spurius,-a,-um (adj.A), 'spurious' in epithets, an indication of hybrid origin; see false, true; cf. genuinus,-a,-um (adj.A), authenticus,-a,-um (adj.A).

NOTE: not to be confused with veris, gen. sg. of ver, veris (s.n.III), q.v., the season of spring).

NOTE: not to be confused with the noun verum,-i (s.n.II), the truth, nor the adv. verum, q.v., especially at the beginning of a sentence.

- [Chamaeleon; Chameleon thistle, = Cardopatium corymbosum L.] chamaeleon herbae est non una specie, invenitur autem nigra et albida. Verum albida est quae folia habet circa suam radicem in terra diffusa, varia, densa, aspera, quasi spinosa et in medio velut surculum acutum (pseudoGalen in Everett), chamaeleon in not one kind of plant, but both a black and a whitish one is encountered. Authentic [white Chamaeleon] is that which has whitish leaves that are around its root, spread out on the ground, variable [i.e. of different elements], dense, rough as though spiny, and also in the middle a pointed shoot.

- verum L. hastatum Desv. testibus insuper Kunze et Wright, true L. hastatum, moreover, by the witness of (according to) (both) Kunze and Wright (Stearn 1983).

- postea vero divisione longitudinali in binas dividuntur, afterwards divided into two by a genuine longitudinal division.

- vera sese ostia seminis emissioni destinata, nec spuria ex ipsa gelatina seminifera appendicula esse confirmant (S&A), proven to be true ostia in themselves intended for the emission of a seed, not false appendages composed from the seminiferous gelatine itself.

- Vera biologia nititur perfecta anatomica cognitione organorum quorum opere vita peragitur. (DozyMoek), true biology rests upon complete anatomical knowledge or the organs by the work of which life is accomplished.

- [Cephalozia serriflora] distinctissima et secundum descriptionem datam vera J. catenula, plane alia planta est (Lindberg), [a] very distinct [species] and according to the description given for genuine J. catenula, it is plainly a different plant.

- [moss] Ex iconibus CI. Schwägricheni supra laudatis Entosthodon verus esse videtur (C. Mueller), from the recommended pictures of the eminent Schwägrichen above, it seems to be a real Entosthodon.

NOTE:. occasionally an epithet does not derive from this adjective, as “verae” in Actinocephalus verae Sano & Trovóis is in honor of Prof. Dr. Vera Lucia Scatena, a specialist of the Eriocaulaceae; verae = gen. sing.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
