A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
vertical, “placed in a direction from the base to the apex” (Lindley); “1. perpendicular to the horizon; or 2. perpendicular to the support, usually longitudinal” (Jackson); “of or relating to the vertex: situated at the highest point: directly overhead or in the zenith; perpendicular to the plane of the horizon or to a primary axis, upright; located at right angles to the plane of a supporting surface; directed upward or downward at a right angle to the plane of the body or part of the surface of the earth” (WIII): verticalis,-e (adj.B) [> L. vertex,-icis (s.m.III), q.v.]; in Gk. comp. orth-, ortho-, q.v.; opp. horizontalis,-e (adj.B) and in Gk. comp. plagi-, plagio-, q.v. (e.g. plagiotropus,-a,-um (adj.A), with the direction of growth horizontal, oblique; see erect, perpendicular;

- fila verticalia arcte aggregata, erect threads closely aggregated.

- loculum vacuum intus saepe lamina verticali subdivisum relinquente (B&H), the empty locule often subdivided within with a relictual vertical lamina.

- stigmatis verticalis lobis deflexoadnatis (B&H), with the lobes of the vertical stigma deflexed-adnate.

- stigma verticale, the stigma vertical.

arrectus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v.: “pointing upwards” (Lindley); set upright, pointing upwards, diverging from axis at angle of less than 30* (Stearn 1983); (in fungi) “stiffly upright” (Ainsworth & Bisby).

erectus,-a,-um (part.A), q.v.: “upright, perpendicular to the ground or its attachment” (Jackson); (fungi) “upright and straight up, not curved up” (S&D).
