A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Verruca,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. verruca: wart, wart-like, outgrowth or swelling; “warts. Sessile elevations of a glandular nature. Sometimes applied to the perithecium of Fungals” (Lindley); “1.a wart or elevation sometimes of a glandular nature; 2. a sessile apothecium, as in Verrucaria; 3. the perithecium of some Fungi” (Jackson):

- verrucis bubalinis vel flavis pyramidalibus ornatus; ornamented with buff or yellow pyramidal warts.

- at verrucae fructificationi haud inservientes, but the verrucae are not serving in fructification.

- [moss] sed ciliae basis calyptrae vel papillae s. verrucae superficiei nullius momenti sunt (C. Mueller), but the cilia of the bottom of the calyptra, or the papillae [s. = seu, ‘or’] verrucae of the surface are of trifling importance.

- [Dissodon; moss] pedunculo breviusculo verrucis magnis hyalinis scabro (C. Muell), with the peduncle [i.e. seta] somewhat short, roughened by large, hyaline warts [i.e. wart-like outgrowths).

NOTE: callus,-i (s.n.II), q.v., “a hardened part; anything which has acquired unusual hardness and toughness. Also used in the sense of verruca” (Lindley).
