A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
ventricose, bellied, bulging, swollen; swelling unequally or inflated on one side; “swelling unequally on one side, as the corolla of many labiate and personate plants” (Lindley); (fungi) ‘swelling out in the middle or at one side’ (Ainsworth & Bisby); (fungi) “(of stipe, spores, cystidia, etc.) swollen or enlarged in the middle” (S&D): ventricosus,-a,-um (adj.A) [> L. venter,-tris, s.m.III], gasteropodus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v.; see also lecythiformis,-e; cf. strumosus,-a,-um (adj.A); see utriformis,-e (adj.B);

- (moss) archegonia in lamina ventricosa jugi ultimi foliorum inclusa, the archegonia included within the swollen lamina of the final pair of leaves.

- [fungus; Peziza] P. stipitata mediucris ex ochreo rufescens , cupule ventricosa, margine farinoso crenato (S&A), P. stalked, medium-sized, reddish-ocher, with the cupule ventricose [i.e. unevenly swelling], with the margine mealy, crenate.

- Palmae armatae, caudice elato solitario saepius medio ventricoso, annulato, dense aculeato vel spinoso (B&H), palmes armed, with the caudex high, solitary, more often ventricose [i.e. swollen out] in the middle, marked with rings, densely aculeate or spiny.

- [moss] antheridia paraphysibus destituta, minima, pauca, intra foliorum supremorum laminam ventricosam recondita (DozyMoek), the antheridia lacking paraphyses, very small, few, hidden within the ventricose [i.e. swollen] lamina of the highest leaves.

Catathelasma ventricosa, a mushroom, perhaps associated with the double ring, superior and persistent, which at first flares upward; Alopecurus ventricosus, a grass, 'bellied-out', from the upper sheaths inflated.

cucurbitiformis,-e (adj.B): cucurbitiform, "(of cystidia) long gourd-shaped; ventricose below, with long neck or snout, same as 'ventricose-rostrate,' 'sicyoid' and 'lageniform,' unless one chooses to make distinctions on the length of the neck or prolongation; cf. 'utriform' (S&D)

pistilliformis,-e (adj.B), (fungi) “(of cystidia) shaped like a pistil, more or less ventricose at the base, with a moderately long neck, and a slightly swollen apex” (S&D).

sicyoideus,-a,-um (adj.A), sicyodes,-is (adj.C, declension at -odes): sicyoid, sicyodic, "(of cystidia) gourd-shaped; elongate-pyriform; ventricose below, with a beak or neck of varying length" (S&D), = lageniform, q.v. [> Gk. sikyos, the common gourd or cucumber].

ventricose-rostrate, (fungi) 'ventricose with a tip or beak or narrowed prolongation; same as 'lageniform,' 'sicyoid,' and 'cucurbitiform,' unless one chooses to make distinctions on the length of the neck or prolongation,' (S&D): ventricoso-rostratus,-a,-um (adj.A):, cf. utriformis,-e (adj.B).
