A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Velamen,-inis (s.n.III), abl. sg. velamine, nom. & acc. pl. velamina, dat. & abl. pl. velaminibus: cover, covering;

- stratum tenue saxa limumque velamine continuo obducens, layer thin spreading over rocks and mud as a continuous cover.

- velamen radicum, velamen, i.e. the moisture-absorptive covering of aerial roots of tropical orchids and aroids (Stearn 1983).

- secretione tenaci pro affixione ad velamen proctodaei interius, holdfast secretion for the attachment to the inner covering (i.e. lining) of the hindgut.

Velamen: "A thin, often chartaceous ... or pergamentaceous ... outermost tissue layer of an aerial root; esp. in Orchidaceae" (Kiger & Porter 2001).

Velamen radicum: Velamen [-inis (s.n.III), ‘covering]’ radicum [=gen.pl. radix,-icis (s.f.III) ‘root’], i.e. the root-covering, covering of the root: “a layer of spiral coated air-cells found upon the roots of certain tropical Orchids and other plants” (Lindley).
