A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Valve, one of the segments into which a capsule, or fruit, separates on dehiscence; used in mosses in particular reference to capsules of the Andreaeopsida and some liverworts; valves, “the doors by which various bodies open; as the separable sides or face of anthers, the carpels or parts of carpels of fruit: (Lindley); 'one of the portions of the wall of a capsule into which it separates at dehiscence; in anthers opening by pores, the portion of the anther-wall covering the pore' (Gleason 1952); (in bryophytes) “one of the parts or partially detached flap of tissue into which the capsule of most liverworts and hornworts separates upon dehiscence; rare in mosses (e.g., Andreaea)” (Magill 1990): valva,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. valva, nom. pl. valvae, acc. pl. valvas, gen. pl. valvarum, abl. pl. valvis, 'leaf of a folding door;' epistomium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. epistomio (in mycology); cf. annulus,-i (s.m.II): see suture; sometimes called a valvule, q.v.; cf. mericarp.

Craticula,-ae (s.f.I), q.v.: (in Diatoms) craticula, a type of modified, polymorphic valve, together with heribaudii valves in the genus Craticula.

Valvae seminum (neuter gen pl. ‘semen’): ‘valves of the seeds’ “obs. the cotyledons” (Lindley).

Raphe-valve: (diatoms) raphovalva,-ae (f.I). Rapheless valve: (diatoms), areovalva,-ae (s.f.I).

Valve face: (diatoms), frons, gen. sg. frontis (s.f.III).

Note: this noun is with a -t in the stem and means 'front', as opposed to frons, frondis, (s.f.III) which means frond.

Valvocopula,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. valvocopula: see copula,-ae (s.f.I).
Raphe-valve: (diatoms) raphovalva,-ae (f.I). Rapheless valve: (diatoms),

areovalva,-ae (s.f.I).
