Valley: vallis,-is (s.f.III), abl. sg. valle, gen. pl. vallium (i-stem), note this noun is also used of ‘furrows;’ convallis,-is (s.f.III), abl. sg. convalle, gen. pl. convallium (i-stem), 'valley enclosed on all sides;' vallecula,-ae (s.f.I), a little valley, a furrow; fauces (pl. f. III of faux, gen.sg. faucis), gen. pl. faucium (i-stem) 'gorge'; see fauces; [> L. valles or vallis,-is (s.f.III), abl. sg. valle, a valley]; opp. jugum,-i (s.n.II), q.v., abl. sg. jugo, nom. & acc. pl. juga, dat. & abl. pl. jugis, ridge, chain, range of mountains, the ridge on the fruits of, e.g., Umbelliferae, separated by a furrow (vallecula); opp. collis,-is (s.m.III), a hill, high ground;

Vallis Umbrosa, ‘shaded valley’ as it lies in a forested region [= Vallombrosa; Florence, Tuscany, Italy]; an administrative district (ditio); a Benedictine monastic religious order (Catholic Church): Vallis umbrosa (Vallombrosa) 30 km from Florence on Monte Secchieta; abbr. OSB Vall. or O.S.B. Vall. [Ordo Sancti Benedicti Vallis Umbrosae].

D. Blaso Biagi, a monk of the Congregation of Vallis-Umbrosa, an uncommon botanist, and an often diligent companion with regard to hunting plants in our Etrurian travels.
