A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Vagina,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. vagina: sheath, q.v.; “a petiole rolled round a stem, as in Grasses; any part which sheathes some other” (Lindley);

- vagina gelatinosa, gelatinous sheath.

- vaginae caducae cicatrices circulares relinquentes, the sheaths caducous leaving behind circular scars.

- vagina mucilaginis cirum partes trichomatis maturas usque ad 6 um crassa, circum partes juniores ad 1 um crassa atque translucentes, mucilage sheath around the mature parts of the trichome to 6 um thick, around the younger parts to 1 um thick and also translucent.

- herba rhizomate perenni, collo vaginis foliorum vetustis suberosis coronato (B&H), an herb with a perennial rhizome, with the neck crowned with the somewhat erose old sheaths of the leaves.

Vagina,-ae (s.f.I) integra: “a sheathing petiole which forms a continuous tube, not slit on one side, as in Sedges” (Lindley).

Vagina,-ae (s.f.I) medullaris, “medullary sheath, a thin stratum of spiral vessels formed immediately over the pith” (Lindley).
