A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Vacuole, “a cavity in the protoplasm of cells which contains a watery liquid, the cell-sap” (Jackson): vacuola,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sing. vacuola, nom pl. vacuolae, dat.& abl. pl. vacuolis;

- vacuola gaseosa (adj.A), gas vacuole.

- protoplasma roseum in centro vacuolam gaseosam praebens, protoplasm rose in the center a gas vacuole displaying.

- sine vacuola gaseosa centrali, without a central gas vacuole.

- sine vacuolis gaseosis, with gas vacuoles.

- cytoplasma hyalinum, interdum vacuolis digestivis instructum, cytoplasm hyaline, sometimes with digestive vacuoles provided.

- vacuolis contractilibus numerosis per totam cellulae peripheriam sparsis, with contractile vacuoles numerous over the whole circumference of the cell dispersed (Stearn 1983).

- vacuolae apicales contractiles duae, apical contractile vacuoles two.

Bulla,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. bulla, a blister or bubble;

- cellulae bullis praeditae, cells provided with bubbles (gas vacuoles).

Contractile vacuole “small cavities in protoplasm, which increase and decrease in size rhythmically” (Jackson): vacuola contractilis, abl.sg. vacuola contractile;

- vacuolis contractilibus numerosis per totam cellulae peripheriam sparsis, with contractile vacuoles numerous over the whole circumference of the cell dispersed (Stearn 1983).

- vacuolae apicales contractiles duae, apical contractile vacuoles two.

NOTE: Wood (fresh-water algae) used ‘locellus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. locello’ for vacuole:

- cytioplasma viride, subtiliter granulosum, locello pallidiori vel achroo, centrali rarius laterali, praeditum (Wood, algae), the cytioplasm green, finely granulose, furnished with a central or rarely lateral paler or transparent [i.e. colorless] vacuole.
