A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Uva,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. uva: the fruit of the grape vine, a grape; grapes; a cluster or bunch of grapes; a bunch or cluster of fruit, such as but not exclusively grapes; (med.) “the uvula (in the contexts a diseased or enlarged uvula is often implied); staphyloma (of the eye)” (Glare); see berry;

- uva aspera (adj.A); nom.pl. uvae asperae: sour, green, unripe grape(s).

- uvae acerbae (adj.A): unripe, immature, acerbic grapes.

- uva duracina, a hard-berried grape-berry [see duracinus,-a,-um (adj.A)].

- Vitis Africana, duracina J. Bauhin, 2. 71. ‘Marroquin’ (Tournefort).

- uva erratica (adj.A): wild grape.

- uvae passae, dried grapes, i.e. raisins [v. passus,-a,-um (part.A), ‘spread out to dry’].

- uva vinacea (adj.A): a wine-grape, wine-berry.

- [thyme] non minoris etiam usus est ad conciliandam odoris gratiam iis vasis quibus conditae uvae asservari solent (Ray), no less also is its use for uniting the agreeableness of odor with those vessels [i.e. containers] in which it is customary for preserved grapes to be stored up.

- austerus sapor os & linguam moderate constringit & quadam asperitate coarctat. Hic proprie ‘crudus’ appellatur, estque immaturis fructibus peculiaris, ut in succo uvae acerbae, pomorum, pyrorum, mespilorum immaturorum (Ray), an ‘austere’ taste moderately draws up the mouth and tongue, and contracts [them] with a certain asperity [i.e. tartness, acidity]. This is properly called ‘crudus’ [unripe], and is peculiar to immature fruits, as in the juice of immature acerbic [i.e. green, unripe] grapes, apples, pears, medlars.

- uvae in olla in vinaceis conduntur, grapes laid up in a jar in [their skins].

- de ollaribus uvis, on pot-preserved grapes.

Uvae ollares, a type of grape preserved in pots; “the moscatel raisin of Malaga is a most delicious fruit: from the ancient manner of preserving these raisins in earthen jars [ollae], Statius calls them Uvae Ollares (Francis Carter: A Journey from Gibraltar to Malaga); see ollaris,-e (adj.B).

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng., Common Bearberry ursus,-i (s.m.II), uva,-ae (s.f.I) berry (cluster) + ursus,-i (s.m.II).

NOTE: apparently ‘uva’ is a noun in apposition.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
