A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
tunicatus,-a,-um, (adj.A): tunicated, tunicate, ‘wearing a tunic or undershirt;’ coated, covered with a skin or peel; tunicate, having coats, jackets; envelopes, a thin separable covering; “having concentric coats [or jackets], as an onion” (Fernald 1950);

- bitunicatus,-a,-um (adj.A); in fungi, with two walls or coats; crassitunicatus,-a,um (adj.A), in fungi, thick-walled; glabritunicatus,-a,-um (adj.A), smooth-walled; tenuitunicatus,-a,um (adj.A): in fungi, thin-walled.

- [Eleutherine] bulbus tunicatus, brunneus (B&H), the bulb tunicate [i.e. covered with a thin, separable covering;, brown.

- [ORNITHOGALUM BAETICUM — bulbo ovato tunicato non sobolifero (Boissier), with the bulb ovate, tunicate, not bearing a sobol [i.e. a creeping, rooting stem].

Bulbus laminatus (adj.A), “a tunicated bulb, as a hyacinth” (Jackson); see bulbus tunicatus below.

Bulbus tunicatus “tunicated bulb, “a bulb whose outer scales are thin and membranous” (Lindley); coated [bulb], (radix bulbosa tunicata), when the bulb is composed of concentric layers; as in Allium Cepa.

Jacket Cells: (in bryology) “the outer layer of cells of an antheridium” (Magill 1990): cellula (s.f.I) tunicata, nom. pl. cellulae tunicatae.

NOTE: members of the genus Allium (garlic, onion) have tunicate bulbs.

NOTE: laminatus,-a,-um (adj.A), consisting of plates or layers;

- Bulbus,-i (s.m.II) laminatus (adj.A), abl. sg. bulbo laminato, “a tunicated bulb, as a hyacinth” (Jackson).

“The seed … is covered with a double integument, the outer one being thick and of a firm consistence, the inner transparent and tender. The external one is called the external tunic,( tunica externa ), the inner, the internal membrane, (membrana interna).” (Willdenow).
