A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

trumpet-shaped, “hollow, and dilated at one extremity, like the end of a trumpet; as the corolla of Caprifolium sempervirens” (Lindley); “tubular, with dilated orifice” (Jackson);“conical but flaring at the broad end; (in botany) tubular with the limb spreading” (WIII): buccinatus,-a,-um (adj.A), trumpet-shaped; buccinatorius,-a,-um (adj.A) (when somewhat curved); tubaeformis,-e (adj.B), tubatus,-a,-um (adj.A) (when almost straight). The Roman tuba was a straight-sided instrument, the bucina a strongly curved one; cf. funnel-shaped, trombiformis (Stearn 1983); see buccinatus,-a,-um (adj.A); see tromb-, trombi-: trumpet-, or funnel-; see infundibuliformis,-e (adj.B), ‘funnel-shaped;’ tubaeformis,-e (adj.B) and tubiformis,-e (adj.B).

Bucina,-ae (s.f.I) which is “a crooked horn or trumpet (while tuba is usually the straight trumpet)” (Lewis & Short).

Cornu,-us (s.n.IV), abl.sg. cornu: a horn (an instrument originally made from a cow or ram’s horn), “the end, tip ... or other extremity of anything (esp. something curved” (Glare).

Funnel (Eng. noun): “a utensil that has typically the shape of a hollow cone with a tube extending from the point” (WIII); see infundibulum,-i (s.n.II); see funnel-shaped.

trombiformis,-e (adj.B): narrowly funnel-shaped (Stearn).

Tuba,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. tuba: trumpet; “a trumpet with a straight tube (opp. ‘cornu’),” q.v. (Glare); cf. funnel; cf. trumpet-shaped; see tubiformis,-e (adj.B).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
