A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Troglodytes or Trogodytes: Troglodytae, or Trogodytae,-arum (pl.m.I) = Gk. trOglodytai, cave dwellers; “a people of Ethiopia who dwelt in caves, the Troglodytes (Lewis & Short) [> Gk. trOglE (s.f.I), a hole formed by gnawing, esp. a mouses’s hole; generally, hole, as of a serpent; pl. caves (Liddell & Scott) + dytEs (s.m.), a diver > duO, to get or go into, to enter, make one’s way into (Liddell & Scott)]; cf. ammodytes.

Troglodyticus,-a,-um (adj.A), Trogodyticus,-a,-um (adj.A): of or belonging to the Troglodytes, Troglodytic;

- myrrha troglodytica, (Ethiopian) myrrh; see myrrha,-ae (s.f.I)..

- balanus trogloditica, (Ethiopian) acorn (or similar fruit).

Troglodytis,-idis (adj.B); or Trogodytis,-idis (adj.B);

- myrrha troglodytis.

NOTE: Troglodytes is a genus of small passerine birds in the wren family; the generic name refers to “the tendency of these wrens to enter small crevices as they search for food” (Wikipedia, Troglodytes, July 2019). Troglodytes europaeus, a wren.

- cf. Sapientum (gen.pl. sapiens,-entis (part.B), but the gen. pl. perhaps should be sapientium): “pertaining to wise men; used of the better forms of banana in contrast to those called troglodytarum [gen.pl.] considered fit only for apes or cave-dwellers (Stearn 1996).
