A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Trichome, [[as trichome] “any hair-like outgrowth of the epidermis, as a hair or bristle” (Jackson); [as trichoma] “the filamentous thallus of Algals, as Conferva” (Lindley); “1. the filamentous thallus of such Algae as Conferva (Lindley); 2. the filaments in Nostoc” (Jackson): trichoma,-atis (s.n.III), abl.sg. trichomate, nom. & acc. pl. trichomata, dat. & abl.pl. trichomatibus [> Gk. trichOma,-atis (s.n.III), a growth of hair, shock of hair]; = L. pilus,-i (s.m.II), q.v.;

- trichomata simplicia libera mobilia cochleatim tortilia apicem versus attenuata, trichomes simple free mobile spirally twisted towards apex, narrowed.

- trichomatibus ad genicula manifeste constrictis, in parte basali 8 um medio 7 um crassis, apicem versus gradatim attenuatis et in pilum longum hyalinum 3 um crassum egredientibus, with trichomes at junctions (genicula) distinctly constricted, in basal part 8 um, at middle 7 um thick, towards the apex gradually narrowed and into a hair long hyaline 3 um thick going forth.

- trichomata elongata inferne recta superne uncinata vel per totam longitudinem in spiram laxam plus minusve irregularem contorta, apice attenuata, trichomes elongated, below straight, above hooked or for the whole length in a loose spiral more or less irregularly twisted, at the tip attenuate (Stearn 1983).

Note: trichoma,-atis is a neuter, third declension noun (not a feminine first declension noun).

NOTE: trichome may be used for ‘filament’ in certain algae, such as Nostoc; see ‘filament;’

- trichomatibus cum filis leptothrichoideis ramosis intermixtis (Wood), with the filaments intermixed with branched leptothrix filaments.

Anchoring trichome: trichoma affigens (part.B), abl. sg. trichomate affingente; trichoma connectens (part.B), abl. sg. trichomate connectente.

Barbella,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. barbella, one of the short, stiff hairs or trichomes in the pappus of some Compositae.

Calyptra,-ae (s.f.I): “Gomont’s term for a thick membrane shutting off the apical cells of a trichome in Oscillarieae” (Jackson); see calyptra.
