A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Torrent, a violently running river or stream, as in mountains or other steep elevations; a deluge or flood of water; = a "mountain torrent:" torrens,-entis (s.m.III), acc. sg. torrentem, abl.sg. torrente (a contraction of fluvius (s.m.II) torrens); in Gk. comp., rhyac-; see cataract, river (Stearn); cf. scaturigo,-iginis (s.f.III);

- [Hypnum alopecurum] Hab. in saxis torrentibus irrigatis, per montes Alleghanies vulgatum, it grows on wet rocks in rushing streams [i.e. mountain torrents], common throughout the Alleghany mountains.

- minera ferri a torrentibus pervoluta non raro reperiuntur (Desf.), minerals of iron are not rarely found, tumbled about by torrents [i.e. powerfully flowing streams].

- [Lichen Pulmonarius] nec non ad Castanearum radices, tum circa Coenobium Vallis-Umbrosae, tum secus torrentem Limae, in Pistoriensi ditione (Mich.), also on the roots of the Castanea trees, first around the cloister of Vallis-Umbrosa, then along the torrent Lima, in the [administrative district] of Pistoria.

- Аd Garza torrentis originem: in stillicidiis juxta Rovezzani molendina (Mich.), at the source of the torrent ‘Garza,’ in seepage [i.e. dripping moisture] beside the mills of Rovezzano.

- [Lichenoides gelatinosum] Rich.Richardson in rivulo e spelunca, Malham-Cove dicta, in comitatù Eboracensi erumpente primus observavit, postea ipse nascentem vidi hanc speciem in torrentibus Alpinis montis Snowdon aestivo tempore (Dill.), first observed sprouting out in a small stream from a cave, called Malham-Cove, in York county, afterwards] I saw this very species growing in the Alpine torrents of mount Snowdon in the summertime.
