A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Thecaphore, “(obs.) the stalk of an ovary” (Lindley); “the stipe of a carpel, homologous with the petiole” (Jackson): thecaphorum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. thecaphoro.
Thecaphore: “(obsol.) the stalk of an ovary” (Lindley); “the stipe of a carpel, homologous with the petiole” (Jackson); a surface or organ bearing a theca, or covered with thecae; a basigynium (Wiktionary Oct2018): thecaphorum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. thecaphoro;

Basigynium “(obsol.) the stalk of an ovary above the stamens or petals” (Lindley); “a thecaphore, the stalk of an ovary above the stamens and petals” (Jackson): basigynium,-ii (s.n.II), abl.sg. basigynio.

NOTE: of the many definitions of the term “theca,” ‘ovary’ is not one of them, yet the ‘thecaphore’ bears the ‘theca,’ and, as a ‘basigynium,’ it is below the gyne, or female organs: the ovary.

- [Capparideae] thecaphorum e toro ortum gracile (DeCandolle), the thecaphore slender, sprung from the torus.

- stylo thecaphoro breviore (DeCandolle), with the style shorter than the thecaphore.

- [GYNANDROPSIS; G. BRACHYCARPA], viscoso-pubescens, siliqua glabra ovali-oblonga thecaphoro breviore, viscous-pubescent, with the siliqua glabrous, ovale-oblong, shorter than the thecaphore.

- [GYNANDROPSIS; G. HISPIDULA] hispida, foliis 5-foliolatis, foliolis integris, siliqua hispidula thecaphoro breviore (DeCandolle), hispid, with the leaves 5-foliolate, the leaflets entire, with the silique hispiculous, shorter than the thecaphore.

- [Cleome; C. HEPTAPHYLLA] siliqua thecaphoro longiore viscoso-pubescente (DeCandolle), with the silique longer than the thecaphore, viscous-pubescent.

- [Cleome] siliqua pendula glabriuscula thecaphoro vix longiore (DeCandolle), with the silique pendulous, somewhat glabrous, scarcely longer than the thecaphore.

- [Cleome] siliqua cylindracea tenui thecaphoro (pedali!) dimidio breviore (DeCandolle), with the silique cylindrical, thin, shorter by one half than the thecaphore.

- [Cleome] siliqua glabra thecaphoro longiore (DeCandolle), the silique glabrous, longer than the thecaphore.

- [Cleome] siliqua thecaphori longitudine (DeCandolle), the silique with the length of the thecaphore.

- [Cleome] thecaphoro pedicelli longitudine (DeCandolle), with the thecaphore with the length of the pedicel.

- [Cleome] ovario glabro thecaphoro duplo longiore (DeCandolle), with the ovary glabrous, two times longer than the thecaphore.

- [Cleome] Sect. SILIQUARIA. — Torus parvus. Thecaphorum breve aut nullum. (DeCandolle), the torus small. The thecaphore short or none.

- [Cleome] siliquis oblongo-linearibus thecaphoro sextuplo longioribus (DeCandolle), with the siliques oblong-linear, six times longer than the thecaphore.

- [Cleome] siliquis oblongo-linearibus thecaphoro decies longiore (DeCandolle), with the siliques oblong-linear, ten times longer than the thecaphore.

- [Cleome] staminibus 8-16 toro cylindraceo insertis petalis fere et thecaphoro duplo brevioribus (DeCandolle), with the stamens 8-16 inserted on the shortened cylindric torus, with the petals almost, almost than the petals and thecaphore two times shorter.

- [Cleome] staminibus 8 - 16 toro abbreviato insertis petala oblonga stipitata, duplo superatibus thecaphorum fere aequantibus (DeCandolle), with the stamens 8-16 inserted on the shortened torus, two times overtopping the oblong, stalked petals, almost equalling the thecaphore.
