A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
that (Eng. sg.), those (Eng. pl.), demonstrative pronouns; (cf. this (Eng. sg.), these (Eng. pl.); see is (m.), ea (f.), id (n.)(demonstrative pronoun);

1. ille, illa, illud, q.v., (demonstrative pronoun); these pronouns agree in number and gender with their antecedent; their syntax depends on their use in the sentence (i.e. as subject, object, object of the preposition, etc.); note that these pronouns may also be translated as ‘it, it’s’ or ‘they, their;’ etc.;

- flores infectae illis inflorescentiarum sanarum conspicue similes, flowers infected to those of healthy inflorescences conspicuously similar.

- in dorso dentis vel illius sinum occupantes, sori inframarginales, on the back of the tooth or occupying its sinus [i.e. ‘the sinus of that,’ sori inframarginal.

- in setam desposita vel ad illam haerentia grana visibilia, deposited on the seta or adhering to that (i.e. the seta) the grains are visible.

- in base foliorum vel in marginibus illorum papillae multiplices, at the base of the leaves or on the margines of those the papillae are multiplex.

- in genere petalis rubris praedito vel illi affini perichaetia dioicea, in the genus provided with red petals or related to that [i.e. genus], the perichaetia are dioecious.

- species nova singularis inter illas generis Alcantareae, the new species is unique among those of the genus Alcantarea. TO DO OTHERS

- cellulae subquadratae, illis ad margines propinquioribus angustioribus, cells subquadrate, with those nearer to the margins narrower.

- originem istis prolificationibus consideratam mihi provenentes ex caespitulis ramulorum ad apices ramorum, the origin for those prolifications considered by me growing out of the tufts of branchlets at the apices of the branches.

- basis nominum istorum false examinata, the basis of those names falsely examined.

- genus istud ob characterem mancum rejiciendum, that genus, due to a defective character is to be rejected.
