A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
testaceus,-a,-um (adj.A): testaceous, brownish-red, brick-red (H.C.C.0.16), 'brownish-yellow like that of unglazed earthenware' (Lindley), terracotta; “made of bricks or tiles of burnt clay; (also, of pavements, etc.) made of such tiles, etc. pulvlerized; resembling bricks or pottery of burnt clay, esp. in color; (of animals) having a hard outer covering or shell; (also of the covering) (Glare);

-[Pilophoron; lichen] cephalodia saepe tuberculosa testacea vel testaceo-fuscescentia podetiis sparse adnata (Nyl.) the sephalodia often tuberculose, brownish-red or brownish-red becoming blackish-brown, here and there adnate to the podetia.

- [shelled animals] ibidem & animalia visendae magnitudinis: in Exanguibus aquaticis testaceis Murices, Buccina aliaque portentosae molis innumera nascuntur (Ray), in the same place arise animals for the observing of magnitude: among the aquatic bloodless [sc. animals], the aquatic testaceous Murexes, the Buccina [i.e. Welks] and countless others of monstrous hugeness.
