A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Tautonym, “Illegitimate binomial in which generic name and specific epithet are the same. Example: Sophia sophia (L.) Britton. Note: see autonym” (Radford et al 1974): tautonymum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. tautonymo, nom. & acc. pl. tautonyma, dat. & abl. pl. tautonymis; “a taxonomic binomial in which the generic name and specific epithet are alike and which is in common use in zoology esp. to designate a common or typical form but is forbidden to botanical taxonomists under the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature” (WIII); see -nym.

Centaurium centaurium (L.) Wight; Corallorhiza corallorhiza (L.) Karst. (= Corallorhiza trifida Chat.); Lappula lappula (L.) Karst. (= Lappula squarrosa (Retz.) Dumort.); Linaria linaria (Linnaeus) Karst. (= Linaria vulgaris Mill.); Penstemon penstemon of NY reports, not (L.) Britt. = Penstemon digitalis Nutt. ex Sims

Physalodes Physalodes (L.) Britt. (= Nicandra physalodes (L.) Gaertn.)

Alces alces, the Moose; Bison bison, Bison; Gulo gulo, Wolverine; Mephitis mephitis, Striped Skunk; Phocoena phocoena, the Harbor Porpoise.
