syrti-, syrtido-: in Gk. comp. sandbank, sand dune [> L, syrtis,-is (also gen.sg. syrtidis) (s.f.III) “a sandbank in the sea; esp. on the northern coast of Africa, Syrtis Major, near Cyrenaica, now Gulf of Sidra; and Syritis minor, near Byzacene, now Gulf of Cabes” (Lewis & Short) [note adj.B Syrtis,-idis (adj.B), ‘Syrtian” (Lewis & Short)]; "the name of two areas of sandy flats on the coast between Carthage and Cyrene, proverbially dangerous to shipping” (Glare) > Gk. syrtis,-idos (s.f.III), a sandbank in the sea; 'of the sandbanks on the coast of Africa, of which there were two, the Syrtis Major and Minor' (Liddell & Scott)]; see sandbar; see sand dune; see sand;

- syrticola,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. syrticola, dwelling on sandbanks or sand dunes.

- syrtidophilus,-a,-um (adj.A): syrtidophilous, dwelling on sand, dry sandbars or dunes.

Vitis riparia var. syrticola (Fern. & Wieg.) Fern. 'dweller on sand dunes,' the Dune-Grape.
