A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Suture, line or seam formed by the junction or fusion of parts, a junction or seam of union, such as the valves of a moss capsule of Andreaea; a line of opening or dehiscence as of a fruit or anther: sutura,-ae (s.f.I), acc. sg. suturam, abl. sg. sutura, nom. pl. suturae, gen. pl. suturarum, acc. pl. suturas, dat.& abl. sg. suturis (Diatoms); cf. raphe,-es (s.f.I), a seam or suture, especially in Diatoms; see commissure, seam; see rima,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. rima: fissure, crack, cleft, slit; see valve;

- ovula biseriata secus suturam ventralem (B&H), the ovules in two rows along the ventral suture.

- carpella matura sutura ventrali dehiscentia (B&H), mature carpels dehiscent by a ventral suture.

- fructus legumen dictus in valvas 2 secus suturam superiorem vel interiorem et costam seu suturam dorsalem vel inferiorem vel rarius more folliculi ad suturam superiorem tantum dehiscens, fruit called a legume in valves 2 along the upper or inner suture and the midrib or dorsal or lower suture or very rarely in the manner of a follicle at the upper suture alone dehiscing.

- semina suturae superiori ad margines valvarum alternatim affixa, seeds to the upper suture at the margins of the valves alternately attached.

- ovula juxta suturam vexillarem (i.e. suturam vexillo obversam) plura biseriata, ovules by the side of the vexillary suture (i.e. the suture turned towards the vexillam) many in two series (Stearn).

- oogonium sutura externa atque poro interno in positione superiore aperiens, oogonium with external suture and internal pore in a superior position.

- legumina polysperma, fere recta, ad suturas canaliculata, indehiscentia, (F. Mueller), the legumes many-seeded, almost straight, at the base and apex nearly acute, canaliculate on the sutures, indehiscent [i.e. opening irregularly].

- ovula in carpellis solitaria, amphitropa, suturae ventrali peltatim affixa, rarissime anatropa (B&H), ovules solitary in the carpels, amphitropous, attached peltately to the ventral suture, very rarely anatropous.
