A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Suspensor, suspensorium, the filament by which an embryo is suspended in some seeds; “a cellular cord by which the embryo of some seeds is suspended from the foramen” (Lindley); “a group or chain of cells that is produced from the zygote of a heterosporous plant and serves to push the embryo which arises at its extremity deeper into the embryo sac and into contact with the food supply of the megaspore: one of the two hyphae in fungi of the order Mucorales that bear gametangia at their tips and later support the zygospore” (WIII); a hypha supporting a gamete, gametangium, or esp. a zygospore (Ainsworth & Bisby): suspensorium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. suspensorio.
