A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
surrogans (subrogans),-antis (part.B): substituting, putting something in another’s place (switching, replacing) [> L. surrogo (subrogo-),-avi,-atum, 1., to substitute, to put in another’s place]; ‘for’ = pro + abl.;

- auctores in locum generis classem surrogantes, the authors substituting class in place of the genus.

- lex junior non subrogandus ad legem primum, the younger law is not to be switched to the first one.

- arbor folia pro radicibus surrogans, the tree substituting the leaves for the roots.

- auctores illud nomen pro suis surrogantes, the authors substituting that name for their own.

- subrogare aliquem succedaneum, to substitute some replacement, to replace with a substitution.
