Superficies,-iei (s.f.V): the (upper) surface [super + facies], the face, as a floating alga frond, the side that faces the sun, although often used simply for 'surface;' the outer, inner, under surface of any solid object; see pagina,-ae (s.f.I), which refers to 'page, side', facies,-ei (s.f.V), ‘face;’ see summus,-a,-um (adj.A); cf. the lower side (of a leaf or frond): pagina aversa;

- variat ostiolis laevibus (in Alno) et rudibus i. e. superficie inaequali conspicuis (in Cytiso Laburno) (A&S), it varies with the osteoles conspicuous, smooth (on Alnus) and rough, i.e. with an uneven surface (on Cytisus, Laburnum).

- sphaerulae superficies subtuberculosae, the surface of the sphaerules somewhat tuberculose.

- superficies pilei ubique ater maculis albis ornatus, surface of the pileus black throughout, decorated with white spots (Stearn).

- volva contextu albo in superficie interiore exterioreque atro-brunneo praedita, volva provided with a context white on the inner and outer surface dark brown.

- cellulae hyalinae in interiore superficie prois veris, hyaline cells on the inner face with true pores.

- superficie stipitis ubique citrina, with the surface of the stipe everywhere lemon-colored.

- thalli superficies trichomatibus instructa, of the thallus the upper side with trichomes arrayed; cf. phycoma (Stearn).

- cellulae laminae in superficiebus ambabus folii mamillato-papillosae; cells of the lamina on both surfaces of the leaf mamillate-papillose.

- radices in putrilagine emollitam ligni superficiem penetrant (Hedw.), the roots penetrate the the surface of the wood softened by rottenness

- [moss] in paucissimis omnino plana, nempe superficie omni flexura et concavitate carente, deprehenduntur (Bridel), in a very few [sc. species] are found [with a surface] everywhere flat, that is, with the surface lacking any flexure and concavity.
