A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Suffrutex,-icis (s.m.III), abl.sg. suffrutice, nom. & acc. pl. suffrutices, dat. & abl. pl. suffruticibus: subshrub, “an undershrub. A shrub of small size, and herbaceous at the ends of the shoots, though woody at their base” (Lindley); ‘not quite a shrub,’ undershrub, half-shrub, perennial plant with only lower part woody, the upper, herbaceous part, dying back seasonally; cf. shrublet;

- fruticulus vel suffrutex parvus erectus, small erect shrub or subshrub.

- hегЬаe, rarius suffrutices v. fruticuli, saepius glabrae et plus minus succulentae (B&H), herbs, more rarely half- or small shrubs, more often glabrous and more or less succulent.

- frutex v. suffrutex nanus, caule intus flavo (B&H), dwarf shrub or subshrub, with the stem yellow inside.

NOTE: suffrutex: “A woody plant, without buds which is not an arm’s length in height” (S. Gray).
