A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
subtilis,-e (adj.B), compar. subtilior,-ius (adj.B); superl. subtilissimus,-a,-um (adj.A): fine, slender, thin; delicate, subtile; precise, not thick or coarse; syn. tenuis,-e (adj.B); opp. crassus (adj.A), q.v., ‘thick;’ opp. grossus,-a,-um (adj.A), ‘coarse, thick;’ see thin; see tough;

- cupula acetabuliformis, squamis subtilibus, laevibus arcte adpressis, cupule acetabuliform, with delicate, smooth, closely appressed scales.

- folia tenera et subtilia aetate duriora et crassiora, the leaves delicate and thin, with age harder and thicker.

- folia 2-6 unc. longa, glandulis copiosis quidem sed subtilibus perforata (F. Mueller), leaves 2-6 inches long, with copious glandules certainly, yet delicate, perforate.

- caryopsidibus pallidis rotundis lenticulari-compressis marginatis subtilissime cancellatis stipite pluries longioribus (F. Mueller), with the caryopses pall, round, lenticular-compressed bordered, very finely reticulate, many times longer than the stipe.

- folia saepe breviora glandulis oleigeris subtilioribus et minus evidenter pellucentibus quam in alii speciebus instructa (F. Mueller), the leaves often shorter, provided with finer oil-bearing glandules and less evidently pallucid than in the other species.

persubtilis,-e (adj.B): very fine, delicate; pertenuis,-e (adj.B)

subtiliusculus,-a,-um (adj.A): somewhat fine, delicate, subtile.
