A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

strobil-, strobilo-: in Gk. comp. [pine-]cone-shaped [> Gk. strobilos (s.m.II), round ball,; fir, pine cone (Liddell & Scott); also > LL. pine cone]; cf. cono-: in both Gk. and L. comp. cone-, conelike, cone-shaped.

Strobilanthes, > Gk. strobilos, a cone + anthos, a flower; “From strobilos, the cone of a pine, and anthos, a flower: the inflorescence in the bud state resembles the cone of a pine” (Paxton); “from the form of the flower-head in some species. Acanthaceae” (Stearn 1996).

Strobilorachis (s.f.III): a synonym of Justicia (with a rachis shaped like a strobilus); “Strobilorachis. From strobilos, a cone, and rachis, a flower-stem; flowers collected in cones” (Paxton).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
