A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

striolatus,-a,-um (adj.A): striolate; finely striate, i.e. with fine linear markings or ridges; “faintly striped or with fine lines” (Stearn 1996); (in bryophytes) “finely ridged” (Magill 1990) [> striola,-ae (s.f.I) a fine, linear marking]; see lineatus,-a,-um (part.A); see ‘lined;’

NOTE: grammatus,-a,-um (adj.A): 'with raised lines,' striped (apparently broader than striate);

[in mosses] striolate: often longitudinally or vertically finely striate, with very fine, linear markings as on the laminal cells of Hymenoloma and Amphidium, which appear papillose in cross section. The outer face of the exostome teeth may be cross-striolate in the double peristome of Amblystegiaceae. The leaves of Brachythecium plumosum are lightly striolate.

- pileus grammatus, cristis atro-griseis, sulcis bubalinis, pileus with raised lines, the crests dark gray, the furrows buff.

- [Dicranum albicans] peristomii dentibus majoribus, densius articulatis densiusque striolatis (Brid.), with the teeth of the peristome larger, more densely articulate and more densely striolate.

- peristomii dentes illis D. longifolii latiores, angustius articulati et distinctius striolati (Brid.), the teeth of the peristome wider than those of Dicranum longifolium, more narrowly articulated and more distinctly striolate.

- [liverwort] Kantia arguta, cellulae in cuticula a papillis striolato-punctatae (Lindb.), the cells on the cuticle striolate-punctate from papillae.

- [Abelmoschus albo-ruber] semina seriebus subtilissimis tuberculorum striolata (F.Muel.), the seeds finely streaked with extremely fine series of tubercles.

- [Eriocaulon lividum] semina albo-striolata (F.Muell.) the seeds [finely] white-streaked.

- [Eriostemon alpinus] seminibus opaco-nigris striolatis, with the seeds finely streaked opaque-black.

- petioli teretiusculi, striolati basi et apice incrassati (F.Muell), the petioles somewhat tapered-cylindric with fine streaks at the base and thickened at the apex.

NOTE: striatus,-a,-um (adj.A) refers to fine linear grooves; lineatus,-a,-um (part.A) refers to lines without height or depth.

[alga] Laurencia striolata

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
