A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Spongiola,-ae (s.f.I): spongelet (Eng.noun) (Jackson); a little sponge, spongelet: “the young tender extremity of a root, by which fluid food is absorbed from the earth” (Lindley); “a name given to the root-tip, formerly thought to be a special absorbing organ, the Epiblema of Schleiden” (Jackson); "formerly used of the root-tip; the stigma and the caruncle [q.v.] when spongy" (Stearn) [> L. spongiola,-ae (s.f.I): “a bedeguar-gall; a matted tuft of asparagus roots” (Glare); dim. L. spongia,-ae (s.f.I), sponge]; see spongia,-ae; see pileorhiza; see root-cap; see epiblem.

Spongiola pistillaris (adj.B), abl. sg. spongiola pistillari, “(obsol.) the stigma” (Lindley); “the extremity of the pistil, the stigma” (Jackson)..

Spongiola radicalis (adj.B): “DeCandolle’s name for the root-cap” (Jackson).

Spongiola seminalis (adj.B): “a wart-like excrescence found on some seeds” (Lindley); “the caruncle of certain seeds” (Jackson).

Orae radicum: “(obsol.) the spongioles” (Lindley); orae (> L. ora, extremity, outside edge) radicum [gen.pl. radix,-icis (s.f.III)], (obsol.) = spongioles (Jackson); = root-cap, q.v.

Spongiola,-ae (s.f.I): a genus in the Orchidaceae.
