A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

solo (adv.): only, solely; see solus,-a,-um (adj.A);

NOTE: not to be confused with abl.sg. of solum,-i (s.n.II), q.v., soil;

NOTE: this adverb seems not to have been used in classical or medieval Latin, but was used by Linnaeus and Ray;

- [Scutellaria] Obs. [=observatio]. Solo fructu ab omnibus aliis abunde distinguitur (Linn.), it is exceedingly distinguished from all the others only by the fruit.

- [Lilium convallium] solo floris colore a praecendente differt (Ray), it differs solely from the preceding by the color of the flower.

- [Eryngium coeruleum] solo summitatum & capitulorum colore pulchre coeruleo seu Amethystino a [E.] vulgari differe videtur (Ray), [Eryngium coeruleum) seems to differ only from E. vulgaris by the beautiful (sky)blue or Amethystine [i.e. a blue-violet] color of the tips and capitula.

- [Thalictrum montanum] solo floris colore a praecedente differt (Ray), [Thalictrum montanum] differs from the preceding [sc. species] only by the color of the flower.

- solo Valentino agro sponte nascentem & Martio florentem observavit Clusius (Ray), Clusius observed it growing naturally in the Valentine region and flowering in March.

- [Hepatica flore purpureo, the Hepatica with a purple flower] solo floris colore saturatiore violaceo a prima species differt (Ray) [i.e. Hepatica flore coeruleo simplici major].

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
