A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

sepiarius,-a,-um (adj.A), also saepiarius,-a,-um (adj.A): “growing in hedges or used for hedging” (Stearn 1996) [> L. sepes, gen. sg. sepis (s.f.III), q.v., also saepes, gen.sg. saepis (s.f.III), hedge of shrubs, fence]; cf. trabeus,-a,-um (adj.A).

Adenocalymma sepiarium (Bignoniaceae); Aegle sepiaria (Rutaceae); Blancaea sepiaria (Fabaceae); Capparis sepiaria (Capparaceae); Melastoma sepiariu (Melastomataceae); Phaseolus sepiarius (Fabaceae).

[grass species] Canna sepiaria = a synonym of Phragmites.

[fungus] Crinipellis sepiaria; Gloeophyllum sepiarium

NOTE: both these decay fungi grow on dead conifers, quaking aspen, and on wood in lumberyards, i.e. on wood substrates. Although its color is orangish, maturing to dark brown, these epithets are probably not a reference to the ink of the cuttlefish (sepia,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., but to the habitat, growing on wood in hedges, thickets and wooden fence palings (sepes,-is (s.f.III), q.v. An alternative spelling would be saepiarius,-a,-um (adj.A).

NOTE: as a noun, a ‘sepiarius,-i (s.m.II)' could refer to a dealer in cuttlefish (sepiae).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
