sacer, sacra, sacrum (adj.A); also sacer, sacris, sacre (adj.B); superl. sacerrimus,-a,-um (adj.A): dedicated or consecrated to a divinity, holy, sacred = Gk. (h)ieros; holy, venerable; “that is under divine patronage or protection, holy, sacred: (of towns, topographical features); (of living creatures); (of trees and other plants)” (Glare); (eccles.) “sacred, consecrated, holy” (Stelten); cf. sanctus [divinus]; opp. profanus,-a,-um (adj.A);

- locus sacer et profanus, a sacred and an unholy place.

- sacer lapis, a stone landmark, a mere-stone.

- cera,-ae (s.f.I) sacra, holy wax, “propolis or bee-glue” (Glare); see propolis,-is (s.f.III).

- sacra ancora (s.f.I), the sacred anchor, i.e. hope; see ancora,-ae (s.f.I).

Boswellia sacra (Burseraceae), whose aromatic gum resin, once used medicinally, is a source of frankincense (olibanum), used in incense and perfumes; see frankincense; see incense.
