A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
saccatus,-a,-um (adj.A): having the form of a sac or pouch, sac-like, pouched, bag-shaped, saccate, abruptly and deeply concave, forming a sac; “resembling a bag; provided with pronounced sacs or nectar-producing pits” (Stearn 1990); (bryology) sac-like; abruptly and deeply concave, e.g. forming a sac; (liverworts) “deeply concave, inflated, bag-like” (Crum); see pouched.

NOTE: (pharm.) sacco,-avi,-atum 1. “to strain through a bag” (Bennitt); saccatus,-a,-um (part.A), (strained through a bag).

NOTE: to be ‘gibbous,’ q.v., may indicate “a pouch-like enlargement of the base of an organ, as of a calyx” (Jackson);

NOTE: sacculus,-i (s.m.II), q.v.: a little sack or bag, such as for filtering (wine, grain);

- saccata aqua, filtered water (opp. turbida aqua, ‘muddy water’).

- valvis reticulatis, deltoideis navicularibusve, saccatis (B&H), with the valves reticulate, deltoid or boat-shaped, pouched.

- [Saccopetalum} species 5, 2 Indicas, 1 Javanica, 1 Philippinensis; quinta Australasica a ceteris paullulum recedit petalis interioribus ample cymbaeformibus nec basi tantum saccatis (B&H), species 5, 2 Indian, 1 from Java, 1 in the Philippines; the fifth Australasian, recedes a little from the rest by the inner petals fully cymbiform [i.e. concave and keeled], barely not saccate at the base.

- DICENTRA. Petala 2, exteriora basi saccata, libera (B&H), petals 2, the outer saccate at the base, free [i.e. not fused].

-[Saccopetalum] petala 6, biseriatim valvata, exteriora parva, sepaloidea, interiora multo majora erecto-conniventia basi saccata, v. cymbaeformia (B&H), petals 6, valvate in two rows, the exterior [petals] small, sepaloid, the inner much larger, erectly-connivent [i.e. converging but not fusing together], saccate at the base or cymbiform [i.e. concave and keeled].

- [Adlumia] petala 2, exteriora basi saccata, cum interioribus arcte coalita (B&H), petals 2, the outer saccate at the base, tightly fused with the inner ones.

- [CORYDALIS] petalorum exteriorum alteram basi calcaratum, saccatum v. gibbum, alteram planum (B&H), one of the outer petals calcarate, saccate or gibbous at the base, the other flat.

- [Calypso] labellum sepalis longius, lobis lateralibus superne supra lobum medium saccatum connatis (B&H), the labellum longer than the sepals, with the lateral lobes connate distally, over the middle saddate lobe.

Bisaccate, having two little bags, or pouches (Paxton).

Saccate volva, (fungi) “a volva that remains behind at the base of the ‘stipe’ as a sac, cup, or sheath and usu. leaves the ‘pileus’ naked (see Bas, 1969)” (S&D): volva,-ae (s.f.I) saccata.

Phallogaster saccatus Morgan.

Aristolochia saccata; Myanthus saccatus; Stachytarpheta saccata.

cf. Triphysaria, Fischer. From tris, three, and physa, a bladder; three segments of the lower lip of corolla saccate. Scrophulariaceae. (Paxton).
