A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
sacc-, or sacci-, or sacco-; -saccium,-ii (s.n.II): in L. comp. sac-, pouch-, bag- [> NL fr L. sacc-, a bag [> L. saccus,-i (s.m.II), q.v., a sac or bag];

- [Saccolabium] paria polliniorum geminatim arcte cohaerentium libera, globosa, flava, ceracea, cum caudicula solitaria et glándula stigmatis decidua (F. Mueller), pairs of the geminately [i.e. in the manner of pairs tightly cohaering, pollinia free, globose, yellow, waxy, with the caudicle single [i.e. only one], and the glandule of the stigma deciduous.

Saccanthus,-i (s.m.II), ‘sac-flower’ (Scrophulariaceae).

Saccidium,-ii (s.n.II): Gk. dim. of sakos (Orchidaceae).

Saccolabium, Blume. From saccus, a bag, and labium, a lip ; in allusion to the bagged labellum of all the species. Orchidaceae (Paxton); “in allusion to the lip of the flower. Orchidaceae” (Stearn 1990); Saccolabiopsis.

Saccoloma,-atis (s.f.III).

Saccopetalum,-i (s.n.II); petala interiora basi saccata, v. cymbaeformìa (B&H), the inner petals saccate or cymbiform [i.e. concave and keeled] at the base.

Orchidaceae: Saccochilus; Saccoglossum; the epithets scissosaccus of (Appendicula, Cyphochilus, Habenaria) appears to be a noun in apposition.

[fungi] Saccoblastia Moeller; Saccobolus Boud., Saccomyces Serbinow; Saccopodium Sorok., Saccothecium Fr.

NOTE: fungal genera beginning with Saccard-, or Saccardo- commemorate Pier Andrea Saccardo, 1845-1920, a botanist and mycologist.
